When it was suggested that the Food Nazis of America would go after certain types of food, people scoffed at the idea. After all, America is the home of the free. But lo and behold, a number of Food Nazis have begun a campaign against certain types of food.
Using the anti-obesity line of attack, they have begun an attempt to limit the types of food available in the schools. I happen to agree that America eats too many carbs and fatty foods but when did we stop being America and become a dictatorship.
School districts across America are attempting to limit the types of foods that are available in schools, both in the cafeteria line and vending machines. School boards and admini
strators are being bombarded with studies about healthy eating.
But let’s face it, institutional school food is not very appetizing. A bag of chips or a donut is more appealing to most kids. This will be a tough uphill battle for schools to win.
The latest study by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation reports that nearly half of elementary school children can buy junk food in schools. Federal regulators are crafting a new proposal to set new standards standards for foods and beverages in our schools.
Of course, there is no control over the foods that students bring in their lunch bags or boxes, unless our schools are expected to inspect every single one. But that’s what the Food Nazis are for.
In the next campaign of the food wars, the Food Nazis in Florida are being led by State Senator Ronda Storms (R) who is proposing a bill to expand the list of foods that people can’t purchase with food stamps.
The bill would prohibit the use of food stamps to purchase “foods containing trans fats; sweetened beverages, including sodas; sweets, such as Jello, candy, ice cream, pudding, popsicles, muffins, sweet rolls, cakes, cupcakes, pies, cobblers, pastries and doughnuts; and salty snack foods, such as corn-based salty snacks, pretzels, party mix, popcorn and potato chips” and other foods of the unhealthful variety.
For good measure the bill also would prohibit the use of the stamps in any restaurant. However, the implementation of these new rules would require a Federal waiver. The government allows such items as soft drinks, candy, cookies, snack crackers and ice cream.
Of course, these types of exclusions will bring a firestorm of attacks from the food industry, the snack manufacturers, soft drink bottlers, baking companies and candy companies. The various states that are looking to implement them should brace themselves for the relentless attacks to come.
Essentially, we live in a free society. Education is essential for good health but outright prohibitions will encourage all sorts of attempts to circumvent the rules. Remember Prohibition?
All of this endless regulation costs ever-increasing sums of taxpayer money. Isn’t it time to publish the studies and educate the populace on healthier eating rather than top-down control? After all, when did we become Russia or China.
