(MTV) Madonna has scrapped her plans to tour Australia in the spring as part of her MDNA Tour, according to her concert promoter, Live Nation (via the BBC).
“Madonna’s tour will end in South America in December as planned. That’s all we can say,” a Live Nation spokesperson said.
Although the pop queen never officially announced any tour dates Down Under, a number of Australian media outlets are reporting that stadiums had already been booked in Sydney and Melbourne for early next year. It was rumored that Madonna planned to announce the concerts last week, but decided to hold off until after the Olympics. Several sources are citing a combination of high ticket prices and a crowded concert market for the scrapped tour plans.
Arthur Fogel, CEO of Live Nation Global Touring, indicated to Billboard in February that the singer would tour Australia while talking up her MDNA Tour plans. “Of the shows we’re doing, I’d say 25-30 percent will be markets she’s never played before. There’s still a few left,” he said. “We’ll get to these markets where she’s never been, some exciting new places, and get back to Australia after too long a time.”
